The Sony F1 digital transfers worked out superbly.  It has been 34 years since I have heard those songs and I was surprised at how good they were way back when.  What a great set of musicians I got to work with.   Thank you once again.

“What a trip down memory lane!! Several of us had been trying for almost a decade to get this indie record from 1994 remixed and re-released. Stewart did an amazing job with the transfer and with a speedy turnaround time. Excellent communication and attention to shipping of the precious original masters. Everything sounds great and the project will live again because of Stewart’s mastery. Thank you!!! I will be sending much more work your way!!

Stewart and CAW were personal, responsive, and the turnaround was fantastic. The resulting files were easily transferred to me and payment was quick and easy. Couldn’t recommend CAW more – and that’s great to be able to support our Massachusetts businesses.

½” Eight Track Reel-To-Reel Transfer

Creative Audio Works audio tape transfer service can transfer ½” analog eight-track reel-to-reel tape with or without DBX noise reduction to hi-resolution digital audio files. We use a custom head arrangement crafted by John French of JRF Magnetics. In this setup, the erase and record heads are replaced with rollers to reduce drag and pitch fluctuations (wow and flutter). When your transfer is complete, you will receive eight .wav files recorded at 96khx/24bit resolution, ready to be loaded into your DAW of choice ready to be mixed.

Tape Baking may be required if your recordings show signs of Sticky-Shed Syndrome. Creative Audio Works uses a Fisher Scientific Incubator for our tape baking needs.

¼” Eight Track Reel-To-Reel and Eight Track Cassette Transfer

Our Fostex M80 has been modified to run at 7.5ips and 15ips and is accurate within 1db of tolerance.  Pretty impressive for ¼” eight-track. We can transfer 8-track reel-to-reel recordings made on R8,  A8, A8 LR, and M80 decks with Dolby noise reduction, running at 15ips, and Tascam 388 decks with DBX noise reduction.

Tape Baking may be required if your recordings show signs of Sticky-Shed Syndrome. Creative Audio Works uses a Fisher Scientific Incubator for our tape baking needs.

This recording is the group Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, a live performance performed at the North Shore Music Theatre, Beverly MA., on September 18, 1987. Originally recorded on a Sony PCM 501 modified with Apogee ADDA converters.

Digital Audiotape transfer

Creative Audio Works can convert digital audio formats such as Digital Audio Tape (DAT), Alesis ADAT M20, Sony PCM F1 (501, 601, 710), and Nakamichi DMP-100 (compatible with Sony F1) recorded on VHS and Betamax, to digital audio files. DAT, ADAT, and Sony PCM F1 are now unused, but Creative Audio Works can transfer these formats to .wav files ready for you to remix your masterpieces. Depending on your preference, these can be supplied on a hard drive/thumb drive or posted to our server for download.

DAT

Digital Audio Tape (DAT), first released by Sony in 1987, is a digital recording format that gained widespread use in the 1990s. Designed as a high-quality alternative to analog audio tapes, DAT offered superior sound quality and was initially believed to be more durable. These days, many DAT tapes are all that remain from someone’s past recording experience.

Sony F1

Sony f1 digital recorder and converter

Sony F1 transfers are billed based on the time required for each tape transfer. It’s typical to encounter frequent dropouts when dealing with F1-encoded tapes. To salvage and create a playable file from these tapes, Creative Audio Works often needs to make multiple passes, with tracking adjustments for each pass. Consequently, a 2-hour performance tape may necessitate approximately 3 hours for the transfer and editing process. The final cost cannot be determined until the transfer is completed.

Alesis ADAT

ADAT Transfer Service

The Alesis ADAT digital multi-track tape recorder is an iconic piece of early 1990s audio recording equipment. ADATs used consumer S-VHS videotape to record up to 8 digital audio tracks. These modular units allowed up to 16 ADAT machines to be synced together. This made it possible to create a home recording studio capable of simultaneously recording 128 audio tracks, a process known as “mega-tracking.”

At Creative Audio Works studio, we offer multiple Alesis ADAT M20 units to transfer your recordings. We deliver your files as individual, synchronized track stems, using ADAT sync and optical cables to ensure an authentic digital workflow.

This recording was made in the 1980s on a Sony F1 PCM type recorder. Transferred by Creative Audio Works from the original BetaMax tape, there were multiple dropouts that needed attention in order to make the program listenable. By making multiple passes of the tape, which required adjusting the tracking for each pass, Creative Audio Works was able to reconstruct the recording into a playable file.

When working with old media, it is often required to change the pitch of the audio to sound correct. This Pitch Shift Calculator converts speed and tone changes (revolutions per minute- RPM, inches per-second IPS, hertz-Hz) to semitones and cents in order to perform accurate pitch correction.

We understand that every client has unique audio repair needs – why not reach out to discuss your project?

We can transfer reel-to-reel tapes recorded at the following speeds:
